The District Environmental Officer of Tain in the Bono Region, Mr Marvin Ankomah Boateng, has called on residents of Seikwa in the Tain District to desist from the practice of indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

According to him, this will help safeguard the environment in the area.

He made the call during a Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) nationwide refuse dump evacuation exercise which started in the region on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Underscoring the importance of the exercise, Mr Boateng stated that the sanitary conditions of a location was critical to the overall development, therefore, urged the residents to - as a matter of urgency - comply with whatever measures that would be put in place by authorities.

According to him, the long awaited evacuation exercise which was the second after the first in 2009 will help safeguard and improve sanitation in the district.

Even though he could not link any outbreak in the district to the heap of garbage, he was optimistic the exercise will help enhance the health of residents.

He further added that one needed not to be complacent owing to the fact that the district was yet to record any overwhelming health challenge.

"We can't afford to be faced by any eventuality before taking measures to forestall. I thank the government for this bold initiative," he expressed.

Speaking to journalists at the site at Seikwa in the Bono Region, Mr Boateng indicated that a site had been allocated along the Tiadeny Road which was about 3 kilometres from town.

In the light of that, he appealed to the government to facilitate the provision of bins and expedite the timely lifting to ensure that there was sanity in the district.

He assured that after the evacuation, he would team up with the Assembly man, Honourable Eric Yeboah, to sensitise the residents on the need to maintain good sanitary conditions.

The Director of National Disaster Management Organisation, Tain District, Mr Oppong Andrews, who spoke on behalf of the DCE, said the evacuation was long expected and would help maintain good healthy conditions in the area.

He further said that the assembly had plans to provide bins to the residents.

He, therefore, urged the residents to make judicious use of the bins when provided.

He disclosed that it would help bring disease-causing organisms which were likely to cause diseases.
