The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has marked its 20th anniversary with the theme “Reflecting on the KAIPTC’s Journey and its Contribution to Peace and Security Efforts in Africa and Beyond”.
KAIPTC has evolved significantly, now offering advanced degrees alongside training courses in Peace Support Operations, Conflict Management, and Peace and Security Studies.
Since its inception, the KAIPTC has till date trained and tutored over 25,000 participants and students made up of military, police and civilian personnel since its inception. The Centre also collaborates with partners to host peace and security programmes and activities at regional and continental levels.
During the anniversary event, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Ghana Navy, praised KAIPTC’s contributions to peace building in West Africa. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming December 7 elections in strengthening Ghana's democracy and urged all stakeholders to commit to maintaining peace in the region.
Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant of KAIPTC, highlighted the increasing complexity of global peace-building challenges, including climate change and environmental issues. He announced plans for KAIPTC to engage stakeholders next year to raise awareness about the ongoing Galamsey crisis in Ghana, aiming to educate the public on its implications for peace and security.
Major General Gyane's remarks underscored the evolving nature of security challenges, indicating that traditional peacekeeping efforts must adapt to address contemporary issues such as climate change, resource conflicts, and socio-economic instability. He pointed out that the interconnection between these factors often exacerbates conflicts, making proactive engagement and education crucial.
In his address, Rear Admiral Yakubu reiterated the need for collective responsibility in fostering peace, especially as the country approaches a pivotal electoral period. He called on citizens, political leaders, and civil society to actively promote peaceful discourse and conflict resolution, emphasizing that a stable and democratic Ghana contributes to broader regional security.
The KAIPTC's commitment to training and capacity building remains at the forefront of its mission, as it seeks to empower individuals and institutions to effectively respond to the challenges of peace and security in an increasingly complex world. With the growing recognition of its role, the Centre aims to continue shaping the future of peacekeeping and conflict resolution in Africa.
